Cataracts
Protect your eyes and reduce your risk for this common eye condition.
Cataracts are probably the most well-known eye condition associated with age. By age 80, more than half of all people in the US either have a cataract or have undergone cataract surgery.
If you notice unusual or unexplained changes in your vision, call Family Vision Care San Diego or schedule an appointment online.
What are cataracts?
Inside your eye, there’s a natural lens that’s normally clear. Over the years, changes in the eyes can lead to protein breakdown, causing the lens to become cloudy. Through a cataract, things may appear hazy, blurry, or less colorful.
Cataracts usually develop in both eyes, but not always evenly. One eye may be more affected, causing a noticeable difference in vision.
Other symptoms of cataracts include:
- Greater sensitivity to glare and light
- Yellowing of colors
- Dim vision
- Double vision in just one eye
- Needing more/brighter light for reading and similar activities
- Difficulty driving, especially at night
- Seeing rings or halos around lights
Who is at risk for developing cataracts?
While cataracts are common with aging, other risk factors may increase your chances or lead to earlier onset:
- Excessive sunlight exposure
- Past eye surgery
- Excessive alcohol use
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Extended use of corticosteroid medications
- Previous eye inflammation or injury
- Obesity
There is also a strong genetic factor. If family members have cataracts, your risk is higher.
How do I reduce or prevent cataracts?
While cataracts are a natural part of aging for many, these strategies may help slow progression or delay their development:
Stick to regular eye exams
Routine exams help detect early signs of cataracts. Your optometrist may suggest lifestyle changes to improve your eye health if there are changes to your lens.
Protect your eyes from the sun
UV rays contribute to cataracts. Wear sunglasses with UVB protection and a hat when outdoors.
Make positive lifestyle changes
Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, maintain a healthy weight, cut back on alcohol, and quit smoking. These habits benefit your eyes as well as your overall health.
How are cataracts diagnosed and treated?
Your eye doctor can diagnose cataracts with a slit-lamp exam, visual acuity test, and retinal exam.
In early stages, vision changes are often managed with prescription glasses. If that’s not enough, cataract surgery may be recommended.
